Three days of motoring action at Mt Buller for Targa High Country
08 Nov 2013

The annual Targa High Country tarmac rally will hit Mt Buller next month, with over 180 entrants ready to tackle the multi-stage event around Mansfield, Mt Buller, Eildon and the King Valley on November 8-10.
As round two of the 2013/2014 CAMS Australian Targa Championship, this year’s Targa High Country will be the fourth in what has proven to be one of the region’s most popular events.

Run by sports and entertainment marketing company Octagon, Targa High Country will kick off with a street stage in Mansfield on the Friday afternoon, followed by the popular ‘Targa Fest’ vehicle display in the town’s main street. Saturday and Sunday sees drivers take to the road for closed-road tarmac competition stages to Jamieson, Eildon and the King Valley, finishing each day with the awesome climb up Mt Buller, where the vehicles and their drivers will be based each night. The Mt Buller Village offers drivers and spectators the ideal base for the event, with the action of the final stage providing plenty of entertainment, along with live music, dining and a collection of vintage of modern cars on display.

The field will be made up of competitors in 10 different Targa categories, headed by the outright contending Modern section, and with classes for Classics, Showroom cars and Muscle Cars. Modern favourite, Jason White, will be challenged by Matt Close (Audi TT RS) and motorsport legend, Jim Richards (Porsche 911 GT2 RS), while Craig Haysman (1981 Triumph TR7 V8) and Greg Garwood (1976 Holden Torana A9X) will battle it out for Classic honours.

Targa High Country Event Director Stuart Benson is looking forward to heading back to Mt Buller. “The fourth annual Targa High Country really has become a staple of the tarmac rally series where the country’s fastest rally teams and their multi-million dollar machinery tackle a 1000m ascent over 18 kilometres of the most breathtaking road from the base of the mountain at Mirimbah, past the iconic Clock Tower and into the Mt Buller Village.

“Both professionals and enthusiastic amateurs love the challenge of the Mt Buller climb in their favourite sports cars; it’s every bit the rival of famous European passes.”

Director of Marketing, Sales and Business Development for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Amber Gardner, said Mt Buller offers an ideal vantage point for the event. “Mt Buller offers spectators the ideal base throughout Targa High Country. With the final stage of each day finishing in the heart of the Village, spectators can enjoy grandstand seating, commentary, live entertainment, a display of modern and classic vehicles and more. It’s a great weekend throughout the High Country and certainly a highlight on our summer calendar – we can’t wait to see the action that this year’s Targa High Country brings!”
